Redundant preseptal orbicularis oculi muscle causes the epicanthal fold. The presence of an epicanthal fold, the medial skin fold covering the inner corner of the eye, in Asian eye is extremely common. Multiple factors such as dermal extension of levator aponeurosis and thickness of orbicularis oculi muscle are involved in eyelid crease formation. The Asian eyelid can be categorized broadly into three types: single eyelid, low/partial eyelid crease, and double eyelid. Recent research focused on the Asian eyelid has led to improved understanding of its unique anatomy and notable precautions when performing surgery. This chapter discusses East and Southeast Asian eyelids and highlights the differences between Asian and Caucasian eyelids.
